DIY: Personalized Uggs

As a Texas girl, anytime the temperature drops below 70 degrees, I consider it to be an “arctic blast” and immediately start digging out sweaters, scarves and any other cold weather apparel I’ve stored away for summer. Perhaps my most favorite thing to pull from the depths of my closet each winter are my Ugg boots.  Every time I slip them on, they’re like cozy little hugs for my feet.  Did you get a good visual? Good.

Now, we all know that I’m not really one to leave anything well enough alone, as I believe most things can benefit from a little spray painting, glittering, or just general ‘Katie-fying.’ [It’s a thing, look it up. Ok, don’t look it up, but just trust me.]  My Uggs are no exception, so this year I thought I would give them a new look and add a personal touch! [aka ‘Katie-fy’]

I knew I wanted to use gold and kept going back to a geometric pattern. [Maybe I was inspired by my duct tape pumpkin!?!]  As soon as I came up with an idea, I went to work!

MATERIALS

  • Gold acrylic paint
  • Small paint brush
  • Shipping or address labels
  • Scissors [or paper cutter]

To create my pattern, I used shipping labels and cut them into small squares and triangles.  It was certainly trial and error as I was creating the pattern, so I had to play around with it.  Shipping labels were great because they were strong enough to adhere to the leather while I was creating my pattern, but would easily pull off without leaving any residue.  Once I had my pattern in place, I gently painted over it with my gold acrylic paint.  While the paint was still wet, I quickly pulled the labels off [using tweezers for accuracy], and voila! — fancy new Uggs!  I also added a subtle pattern along the back seam for a little something extra.

And if you’re in the area, be sure to mark you calendars for next Wednesday, December 3rd for Austin Tidbits + St. Bernard Sports‘ Ski Chalet Event to kick off the ‘Keep Austin Warm’ campaign, which benefits local charities such as LifeWorks and SafePlace.  With the donation of a gently used coat, you’ll receive $20 off your purchase of $100 or more at St. Bernard [who has some amazing stuff in-store and online, by the way!]  Plus, for every coat you bring in, you’ll be entered for a chance to win a GoPro Hero4!

So please join me for CHAMPAGNE [yeah, I know how to get your attention…] sweets and shopping!  I’ve also selected some great gift ideas for the guy in your life that will be on display in-store so that you can go ahead and cross him off of your shopping list!  You’re welcome.  Hope to see everyone next week!
